There exists for every thermodynamic system a property called the energy. The change of energy of a system is equal to the mechanical work done on the system in an adiabatic process. In a non-adiabatic process, the First Law of Thermodynamics states that the change in energy of a system is equal to the difference between the heat added to the system and the work done by the system.
