The Charpy test measures the energy required to fracture a specimen at a given temperature. It is a common test in industry, and is relatively simple and inexpensive to prepare. In most standardized procedures, a notch is made in the test material to determine the amount of energy absorbed during a fracture.
The Rockwell test measures the hardness of materials by pressing an indenter into the specimen with a pre-determined load. Measurements can then be made of how far the indenter was able to penetrate the test material.
