Find the sample standard deviation for this set of values: 1, 3, 7, 6, 8.

$$$=\sqrt{\frac{1}{4}\times[(1-5)^2+(3-5)^2+(7-5)^2+(6-5)^2+(8-5)^2]}$$$
$$$=\sqrt{\frac{1}{4}\times[(-4)^2+(-2)^2+(2)^2+(1)^2+(3)^2]}$$$
$$$=\sqrt{\frac{1}{4}\times[16+4+4+1+9]}=\sqrt{\frac{34}{4}}=\sqrt{8.5}=2.9$$$
